Gardener / Horticulturist
Cape Schanck Olive Estate is a family-owned and managed olive grove on the southern tip of the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria. We produce award winning extra virgin olive oils and have and run a small organic market garden supplying edible flowers, garnishes, microgreens and specialty leaves to name a few select group of leading restaurants in the peninsula. We are looking for a skilled hands-on grower to take care of the market garden end-to-end, join our team and help us cultivate high quality produce for our local community
The Role
Employment type: Part-time or full-time (negotiable for the right candidate)
This is a hands-on role across the full cycle — growing, harvest, wash and pack, and keeping the garden in good order. It’s varied work on a small operation: some skilled specialist growing, some of the everyday graft of running a productive garden.
What you’ll do
- Plan and execute seasonal planting — propagation through to harvest
- Monitor crop health; manage pests, weeds and disease using natural methods
- Maintain soil health, compost and worm systems
- Fertilise, mulch, and keep irrigation running
- Harvest, wash and pack produce for restaurant orders, to a high presentation standard
- Keep the garden tidy, safe and looking good
Our restaurant produce is hand-finished and detailed — this is what our chefs value. The role suits someone who takes pride in that, and is equally happy with the everyday side of running a garden (wash days, general upkeep). It’s a varied role, so we’re after someone adaptable who enjoys the mix.
About you
- You love growing food, working outdoors and getting your hands dirty
- Some experience growing vegetables, or a horticulture background — but attitude and reliability matter more than years
- An interest in organic / no-dig / regenerative methods (or willingness to learn them)
- Self-motivated and reliable, able to work independently
- Current driver’s licence and have access to a reliable car; comfortable operating garden tools and basic machinery
- Physically fit and comfortable with manual work in all weather
- A horticultural qualification is preferred but not essential for candidates with relevant experience.
- Have the right to work in Australia
